According to the lawsuit, which was filed with the US International Trade Commission (ITC), AMD is said to be seeking monetary compensation from MediaTek, for “past, continuing, and future infringement”. On top of that, AMD also wants the ITC to block MediaTek from infringing upon any other APU and GPU patents that it has. Specifically, the patents that were infringed upon seem to be focused upon three patents. Two of which pertained to its acquisition of ATI Technologies back in 2006.
This isn’t the first time AMD has gone after MediaTek over patent infringements. Back in March 2017, AMD went after the company, along with other brands. Including LG, Vizio, and Sigma Design for violating US patent laws. Ultimately, the ITC ruled in favour of AMD in that case. It should be pointed out that the lawsuit has absolutely nothing to do with the brand’s recently launched Radeon VII graphics card and 7nm Vega GPU, nor its Ryzen 3000 series CPUs that were launched during last week’s CES 2019 show. At the time of writing, AMD has yet to comment on the lawsuit. (Source: Seeking Alpha via Tom’s Hardware, KitGuru)
