Almost immediately after it was put in the Entity List last year, Huawei was granted the extension for the first time. This was set to expire on 19 August, which was when the company was given another 90-day extension. The last time was in November, where it got another 90 days. This makes this latest extension the shortest one of them all, being only slightly over 60 days. Despite the many extensions Huawei has been given, things remain fundamentally the same. While the extension allows the company to trade with US-based companies, this is limited to components that do not pose a “security risk”.
Unfortunately for phone users, this does not include the possibility of having Google’s Android OS in a Huawei smartphone. So if anyone was hoping for the upcoming P40 series to be running Android 10, that’s unfortunately not happening. The US is also going the extra mile to help network providers in rural parts of the country cut ties with Huawei.
