Should OPPO’s plan to manufacture its own chipset be successful, that would technically make it the fifth smartphone manufacturer to do so, after Apple, Samsung, Huawei and more recently, Google. The latter having just announced its new Tensor SoC with the launch of its latest flagship, the Pixel 6.

On a sidenote, OPPO has also said that it wishes to develop its own chip using TSMC’s 3nm fabs, which are only expected to enter mass production sometime in the next year. Of course, it goes without saying that OPPO’s announcement will likely be viewed with a hint of contempt by several of its chipmakers and suppliers, chief among them being Qualcomm. At current, OPPO’s current flagship devices are powered by SoCs provided by both Qualcomm and MediaTek. Likewise, its sister brand, OnePlus, has long been a patron of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon SoC but given the news, there is a high likelihood that the smartphone brand may have to fall in line and begin using OPPO’s homemade SoC in the future.
