While it might have received the official unveiling at the Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit in Hawaii today, the announcement today served only as a mere teaser though. According to the company, more information regarding the chip will only be revealed during a more in-depth session at the event later tomorrow.
Nevertheless, the teaser announcement today still provides a number of significant information though. One of them is the fact that the Snapdragon 855 which is manufactured using the 7nm process technology is equipped with the company’s 4th Gen AI Engine which is said to the 3 times more performance than its predecessors. Not only that, Qualcomm has stated on stage that the AI Engine on Snapdragon 855 has 2x more performance than its competitors. While their names were not mentioned on stage, references made on stage by the company’s Senior VP and GM for Mobile, Alex Katouzian clearly pointed to the Huawei’s Kirin 980 and Apple’s A12 Bionic which is in line with the rumors that we’ve heard before.
Other than that, Qualcomm has also stated that the Snapdragon 855 also features the latest edition of Qualcomm Spectra Image Signal Processor which the company claimed as the world’s first Computer Vision (CV) ISP. Working together with the AI Engine, the new latest generation of Spectra apparently able to recognize the subject and environment that users going to capture with their phone camera which it will then subsequently apply appropriate camera settings to provide the best photo and video results.
Another interesting new feature of Snapdragon 855 is the Snapdragon Elite Gaming which in general, still being draped in mystery. This is because Qualcomm didn’t really provide much detail regarding it aside from that it will apparently deliver “a full system of immersion, visuals, and sound” and the company has been working with game developers throughout the world to “tune the experience”.
