At a glance, the phone looked so identical to Xperia 1 which is why the phone was originally rumoured as its successor that is fondly referred to as Xperia 2. However, the Xperia 5 actually has a smaller display at 6.1-inch and a native resolution of Full HD+ as compared to the 6.4-inch 4K display on Xperia 1.
As for the rest of the phone, Sony has retained plenty of features from Xperia 1 for the new Xperia 5. Among them are the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, 6GB RAM, 128GB UFS storage, the 21:9 aspect ratio on its OLED display and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. Same goes for Xperia 5’s triple rear camera system which includes three 12MP sensors with different sizes and lens. For example, the main camera utilizes a 1/2.6-inch sensor and f/1.6 26mm lens while for portrait and telephoto images, the Xperia 5 relies on a 1/3.4-inch sensor and f/2.4 52mm lens instead.
There is also another 1/3.4-inch sensor with f/2.4 16mm lens and fixed focus setup that is designed to capture super wide-angle images. Sony has also implemented Eye AF technology and optical image stabilization on Xperia 5’s main and portrait/tele cameras. For selfies, the Xperia 5 also uses the same 8MP f/2.0 camera with SteadyShot stabilization and HDR support from Xperia 1. If you feel that the 3330mAh battery on Xperia 1 is quite small, Xperia 5’s battery has even smaller capacity at 3140mAh.
Pre-installed with Android 9, the Xperia 5 will be made available in select markets starting from October onwards. However, Sony is keeping the phone’s price tag a secret for now though and there is also no indication that the Xperia 5 will be making its way to Malaysia too.
